Celebrating 23 years of Vancouver ArtFor twenty three years, Artists In Our Midst has been steadily supporting the Vancouver Art community with their yearly open studio tours. Each year, local artists working in various mediums such as painting, ceramics, sculpting and jewelry open their doors to the public for a weekend long art crawl. The event was created on Vancouver's West side in 1993 by a group of artists and has created an important dialogue within in the community. Over the course of the last 2 decades Artists In Our Midst has built lasting relationships between the public and artists outside the more formal museum and gallery settings. Their mandate is to promote art education and to provide opportunities for community members to enjoy and enrich their lives with visual art. They achieve these goals by giving free public art talks and exhibits, by their volunteer art residencies and artists programs at Lord Byng Mini School for the Arts, and by including their emerging artists in the main exhibition. Artist In Our Midst is supported by merchants who showcase their art, by local donors, and by the diverse communities coming to their events. Artists in Our Midst open studio tour starts May 23rd 11am - 6pm. Enjoy the diverse creative talents in our community by visiting artists in their studio settings. Explore the stories behind the art and artists. Join in celebrating the power of the visual arts as a community-based resource!

There's No Place Like Roam
Ever since Roam Gallery founder Jennifer Angers Daerendinger opened the doors to her community gallery 2 years ago, she hasn't looked back. What started as a pop up store, has quickly grown into it's home at City Square Mall on 12th ave. The little gallery has played host to a myriad of group shows, continuously serving up some of Vancouver's newest and brightest talent.
Jennifer is not just a patron of the arts, she is a huge supporter of them, she realized that the Vancouver arts community needs to be supportive of one another, and with that her main focus and motivation for establishing this gallery is, building a community. And judging by the turn out from last weeks opening, she is right on track.
She is fortunate to be surrounded by a team of people, who share in her vision and have helped with everything, from renovations to hanging the art. Jennifer has stated "You cant' do something like this on your own, you need help, you need a team."
Each month the rotation of artists changes, and Roam hosts an opening reception, where friends, family and collectors are invited to come and meet the artists and view the new work. The artists pay an nominal fee to have there art showcased and Daerendinger, takes only a fraction of what the average gallery would.
Some of Jennifer's future plans for the new gallery include, turning the extra rooms into studio space, where artists can come and create on site, making it an ideal setting for someone who is new to the art industry and is taking the plunge to set out to into the art scene in a supportive atmosphere.

Local artist Andy Dixon is truly on a level of his own. A deeply rich, brightly lit, technicolor level. He is an overly talented, highly creative individual, who is fiercely dedicated to his craft.
Born in Vancouver and raised by two accountants, Dixon started exploring his creative side starting at an early age. He paints, makes music, designs and runs a record label. His very first solo art show in 2008, "How to Draw Everything" showed 16 original works and sold out, he is a full time artist, who has a treasure trove of private clients and exclusivity at, at least 3 galleries around the world.
I have to ask my self, what am I doing?

I recently got to spend some time with him in his East Van studio, as he used his signature colour palette to add the final touches to his newest installment, titled "Canadiana." An art installment created to answer the question: Is Andy Dixon a Canadian artist?
The word impressive hardly does these works of art justice. Andy's artistic style is reminiscent of the greats. Weather the subject he paints is still life, erotic nudes or portrait, his work is like a technicolour Fauvist, or a Rembrandt on a good acid trip.

But his work and the story that each piece tells are more then that, much more, and perhaps we should leave him in a class all of his own. After finding much success in Texas and Europe, he will be leaving Vancouver for a 6 month painting spree in New York.

When it comes to Mr.Dixon and his art, we are at the beginning of something truly great in the art world, something that only comes along every once and a while, the unfolding of an artistic genius.

Next Level Finger Painter
Paolo Troilo, was born in Italy, where he studied Architecture and Modern Literature at the Florence University, then in Rome at the European Institute of Design. After working as an advertising agent for several international advertising agencies, such as Saatchi & Saatchi and Arnold Worldwide, as Art Director first, then as Creative Director. The Ad Exec/Architect turned self taught artist has been making waves the last few years with his striking and emotional finger paintings.
“To think about my finger_figurative_painting as a kind of miracle is the proof that people often underestimate the potentials of our body”- Paolo Trolio
Paolo uses his fingers as a means to do away with and abandon the common tools, thus allowing him to really give himself over to his immensely passionate and powerful works of art.
Explaining his reason for lack of colour, Paolo describes colours as "....an illusion, misleading, traitors. White and black are open doors.”
“Old generations always says that the new generations don’t understand the worth of life because they don’t have something urgent to fight for. But old generations were new generations and new generation will became old generations. Our era is a sneaky bitch, a silent and poisoned escalation covered by the rumors of loud media-voices. We’re now fighting for ourselves, we are our flags.”
His work is deep and methodical, using anatomy as the groundwork for his story telling, mainly focusing on the the duality of the human condition.
Paolo's work has been exhibited around the globe in places such as, San Francisco, Miami, Istanbul, Paris, Madrid, Milan, Rome, Florence, Berlin, Basel, Singapore and Tel Aviv. He currently lives and works in Milan, Italy.

Over the last few years there has been a steady trend picking up in the Canadian art scene, and that trend is, live competitive painting. It's exactly as it sounds. One of the first to hit the scene and spearhead the movement, is the now immensely popular Art Battle. Over the years, it has slowly been picking up momentum, popping up from city to city. Now, there is an Art Battle in every major Canadian city.
In it's infancy, the Vancouver Chapter's Creative Director, was none other then Bill Higgison, who took on the challenge of curating the monthly line ups, built a reliable team as well, he found a home for the show each month.
In it's infancy, the Vancouver Chapter's Creative Director, was none other then Bill Higgison, who took on the challenge of curating the monthly line ups, built a reliable team as well, he found a home for the show each month.
I remember when Art Battle first came to Vancouver, it was held in the back room of Raw Canvas a tiny little bistro style restaurant in Yaletown, at the time, there was perhaps maybe 50 of us, watching as 3 artists at a time would furiously paint what ever they could in the 20 minutes that they where given. When they put down their brushes it was us, the crowd who would vote who would move on and who wouldn't. The winners of the first two rounds would go head to head in the final round for all the glory.
The winners of each final round from every month would meet again at the end of the season for the semi - finals. And that winner would then go to Toronto to 'battle it out with the other champions from across Canada. The reigning champion for two years in a row, was from the Vancouver Chapter, Yared Nigussu.
Today, Art Battle, has exploded, it is now a huge platform for up and coming artists to get noticed and network, instead of three artists per round it is now six. Each monthly event consistently draws hundreds of spectators. Both the Victoria and Vancouver Art Battle's are run by artist and superstar Angela Hillier, who bounces back and forth form city to city bringing us line up after line up of amazing talent.
