The Lab Art Show series is as semi annual event and is Vancouver's fastest growing multi disciplinary art exhibition. The show is creators, Gloria and Etel Bernard's answer to an under valued and under appreciated Vancouver Art scene, featuring 100+ artists from around the globe. This year Lab found it's home at the Yaletown Roundhouse, a Vancouver community centre, located in the heart of Yaletown. The center is know for playing host to many different cultural events and showcases through out the year.

Each Lab Art show event is curated and produced by Glitz Entertainment, Gloria and Etel's Vancouver based events company. The show offers the audience a chance to connect with Vancouver artists. Every Lab Art Show is different from the last, offering us a different perspective into the vast and ever growing Vancouver art scene.

Artists, musicians and dancers come together for one fabulous night of creativity. Typical theme's featured at a Lab Art Show range from short film, music, audiovisuals, painting, sculpture, acting, contemporary dance, animation, fashion show and more. All in one place, a place where the audience can network and showcase their talent.

The power of the vision board

What is a vision board? A vision board is a tool that most successful entreprenuers use to create and maintain their goals throughout the year. Earlier this year, I attended the 2nd annual Vision Board Party, hosted by local Vancouver blogger Genicca Whitney and friends.

Over a hundred local business owners, bloggers and entreprenuers gathered around tables, listening to sage advice from guest speakers such as creator and founder of the ever growing YVR Bloggers group and his the immensely popular "Daddy Blogger" - Ricky Shetty, Alana Ferro sharing her inspiring story of turning tragedy into triumph and fitness superstar Steely Springham with her very encouraging "It's never to late" tale of her rise to the top in the fitness model circuit. All while we clipped inspiring images, words and phrases from stacks of magazines and then pasted them to our giant poster boards.

what does it mean to create a vision board?
and why is it so important?

In today's fast paced culture, which is further perpetuated by social media, it's hard to set goals, stay focused and keep them. By creating a vision board and placing it in an area that you will see it, you are subconsciously imbedding these ideas into your mind. Most successful people will tell you that they use this tool, and yes, most have manifested that which they have posted on the board.

This tool is important for many reasons, but one of the most important is visualizing the life that you would like, being real and honest with yourself. What do you want to achieve? Where do you see yourself heading? These are the types of questions you need to ask yourself before you begin.

What you will need:

Scissors
Glue
Magazines
A general idea of what you are going for, or just cut and paste intuitively
Poster board

Vision boards are great markers for your career path, you can always look back at them and see if it is still in alignment with you, or is it time to make a new one.

mental health & courage

This year we have partnered with Coast Mental Health, for us it was a no brainer, it just made sense. This year we will feature one of their artists from The Coast Art Room and not only will that artist receive 50% of their sold art, we will donate 50% of our tickets sales to Coast Mental Health's Art Program.

The Coast Art Room Program, is the foundation of Coast Mental Health, each year their art room plays host to hundreds of members battling with mental illness, the program is run by the hundreds of generous volunteers who are either Emily Carr University graduates, art teachers or established artists and to celebrate their creative endeavors, every September they put on their own art show and auction.

Coast Mental Health is a community leader and is a registered charity that advances recovery and social inclusion for people with mental illness in the Lower Mainland. Believing everyone has the right to physical and mental health, and that these begin with a home, a meal, a job and a friend, Coast has provided innovative support programs for more than 40 years including supportive housing, personal development, employment, and social programs. CMH is now the largest provider of supported housing and community services in British Columbia to people with mental illness. Last year they served more than 4,200 clients, housing more than 1,100 people in supported residences.

The courage to come back

The Courage To Come Back Awards is a province-wide annual campaign that pays tribute to BC residents who have demonstrated extraordinary courage in their recovery from illness or adversity. The awards are presented to one individual in each of the following categories: Addiction, Medical, Mental Health, Physical Rehabilitation, Social Adversity and Youth.

The Courage Awards gala is an uplifting evening celebrating the best in our province. The Chair of the Courage To Come Back Awards is Lorne Segal, President of Kingswood Capital.

The Hot Art Of A Wet City

Curator and event organizer extraordinaire, Chris Bentzen, has carved out a nice little niche market in the Vancouver arts community. For over a decade he has been bringing artists and the community together with a myriad of long standing shows such as, Hot One Inch Action, Carded! (An annual trading card show featuring the works of 100+ artists), workshops, comedy shows and more!

Voted second best gallery in Vancouver for Westender Best of The City 2015, Hot Art Wet City began as a pop up gallery in 2012, featuring fun, weird and accessible art. Later on they would play host of various openings and featuring artist interviews. They opened permanently at 2206 Main Street in Vancouver in April 2013.

Twelve years ago, Hot One Inch Action was born, created by Jim Hoehnle and Chris Bentzen, it is the original, one-night only show of button art collecting, trading and social interaction. The art of fifty different artists is reproduced onto one inch buttons. The limited edition buttons are displayed on the gallery wall and the audience is offered the opportunity to buy randomly selected buttons in mixed bags of five for $5

In addition to their annual Vancouver show, they have hosted the show in Seattle, Portland, Calgary, Reno and NYC. Hot One Inch Action has received artist submissions from Canada, USA, France, Spain, UK, Hong Kong and Turkey.

What is beheld?

Beheld is a online gallery and artist platform which holds an impressive roster of artistic talent, just waiting to be discovered.

It is the brain child of local entreprenuer Colin Brown and seasoned artist Bill Higginson, the two embarked on their mission a few years back, with their sole goal, to make art more more accessible to public and to help artists find buyers. By creating an online platform, it is now easy for art collectors to discover emerging artists and support them in a variety of ways.
